About Words Without Walls

Each year Caldera chooses a specific artistic discipline as its creative focus. This year, Words Without Walls focuses on art that begins with the word–spoken and written. Professional artists from around the country are collaborating with Caldera arts mentors to provide students with a thorough examination of the role and significance of poetry, creative writing, and spoken word performance, helping them develop confidence in their voices, opinions, and creative abilities.

Bryonn Bain is Brooklyn’s own prison activist, hip hop artist, spoken word poet, author, actor and educator. Described by Cornel West as an artist who “…speaks his truth with a power we desperately need to hear,” Bain hosts BET-J’s award-winning talk show My Two Cents.

Wrongfully imprisoned during his second year at Harvard Law, Bryonn sued the NYPD, was interviewed by Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes, and wrote The Village Voice cover story — “Walking While Black” — which drew the largest response in the history of the nation’s most widely read progressive newspaper.

Become a Friend of Caldera!

The “Friends of Caldera” is a membership society for donors that contribute $1,000 annually. The Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund is providing an incentive grant to Caldera matching $1,000 for each new member we add during the campaign (February 1, 2009 – April 10, 2009). Caldera “Friends” will have until December 31, 2009 to fulfill their pledges.

Caldera’s Development office will be happy to structure installment payments.

“Friends of Caldera” will be invited to visit camp on two different Saturdays during the summer and there will be a cocktail reception this fall.

how do you see yourself? what inspires you? can you tell me a story about the neighborhood you grew up in? do you feel safe in your community?

these are some of the questions students asked their neighbors as part of the hello neighbor project. caldera students in ten communities across portland and central oregon invited their neighbors to be interviewed and photographed as a part of this state-wide public art project created by photographer julie keefe. the students were then interviewed and photographed bykeefe to capture their point of view and introduce them to the community. from this work, 7 foot by 5 foot photo and word banners were created and are on display throughout their communities.
