Application Guidelines
THE AWARD: The Caldera Artist in Residence Program is a residential grant. We offer living and studio accommodations (if required) at no cost. Artists who require funding for travel, materials, supplies or other expenses, should apply to other sources for this support.
ELIGIBILITY AND RE-APPLICATIONS: National and International visual artists, writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, composers, interdisciplinary artists, collaborators, performance artists, media and design artists, architects, scientists and engineers are eligible. A Caldera Artist in Residence alumni must wait one season before reapplying for a return residency. For example: A 2008 resident can apply for the 2010 residency season. Artists who were placed on the waitlist may reapply for the next season.
ADMISSION PANELS: Awards for residencies are extended based on evaluations and scores made by panels consisting of artists and art professionals in each discipline. The panels meet in the summer to review applications. The panelists are volunteers and are invited by the Executive Director. Between 15-30 artists are selected each season. Awards are expected to be announced late August, 2010.
APPLICATION POSTMARK DEADLINE: Applications must be postmarked by June 15, 2010. Please make sure all materials are in English.
PROCESSING FEE: A nonrefundable processing fee of $30 (USD) is required of each application. Please make check or money order to Caldera. If you are a non-US resident, please use International money orders. If you would like to make this payment with a credit card, you must do so over the phone. Please call (503) 937-7594.
APPLICATION MAILING: Please send application and all supporting materials to : Artist In Residence Program, Caldera, 224 NW 13th Avenue Suite #304, Portland, OR 97209.
COLLABORATIONS: Artists who wish to apply as collaborators must each send an application form and two references. Include one Project Description and one payment of $30. Collaborators share a living space and studio. Each cottage can house 3-4 people.
GUESTS: To limit distractions and to create a harmonious, creative community, accommodations are limited to accepted residents only. No accommodations for spouses, partners, or children are available. Friends or family who are in the area for brief visits cannot be accommodated overnight at the facility. They are welcome for day visits. There are many opportunities in the neighboring area for overnight accommodations.
PETS: No personal pets are allowed.
ACOMMODATIONS: While at Caldera you will have a private live/work space equipped with a sleeping loft, kitchenette, bathroom and live/work area. Each A-frame has a wonderful wood stove (we will stock you up with wood) and deck overlooking Link Creek. The kitchens have a coffee pot, 2 burner stove, microwave, small refrigerators and dishes. The main community kitchen, in the Hearth Building, can also be used if you require an oven. Many artists choose to cook together in the main kitchen. There is a weekly communal dinner in the Hearth Building for all artists.
OPEN STUDIOS: On the third Saturday of every residency, Caldera Artists in Residence are asked to showcase their work in progress in an “Open Studio” event that is free and open to the public. While participation in the Open Studio event is not mandatory, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.
COMMUNICATION DURING YOUR RESIDENCY: Caldera is located in a remote section of Central Oregon. Although we do have Wi-Fi capabilities and satellite communications in the main building, it is limited, often spotty and susceptible to storm conditions. Skyping, heavy downloading and uploading must be done during evening hours or the system will be unable to manage the needs of the facility. Cell phone service is similarly spotty. There are cellular “sweet spots’ in certain areas, but dependable cell service is a 20 minute drive. There is a land line for artists’ use, with a personal phone card and one computer to share in the main building. We do recommend a laptop for personal use. The cottages will not get a Wi-Fi connection.
NON-DISCRIMINATION: Caldera does not discriminate against applicants on the basis of age, race, sexual orientation, disability, sex, religion, marital status or national origin.
APPLICATION CHECKLIST: Each downloaded application comes with a checklist. Please make sure that all required materials are sent in a timely manner. Due to the volume of applications received, we are unable to contact you regarding the receipt of your materials. You may call or email (caldera@wk.com) Caldera to request information as to whether the materials have been received. All applications must be in English.
