Residency Description

In fall of 2001, Caldera began awarding residencies to artists and writers in the hopes of supporting the creative process and contributing to the cultural life of the region and the nation.

Each winter, National and International visual artists, writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, composers, interdisciplinary artists, collaborators, performance artists, media and design artists, architects, scientists and engineersĀ  apply to come to caldera for month-long residencies. Each accepted resident is given the time, space and solitude to devote themselves to their work in a private creek-side cottage with additional rehearsal and studio space nearby. Since caldera’s residencies are designed to support the creative process, we don’t require residents to produce a specific product.

On a Saturday afternoon near the end of each residency, Caldera Artists in Residence are asked to showcase their work in progress in an “Open Studio” event that is free and open to the public. While participation in the Open Studio event is not mandatory, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

Caldera’s Artists in Residence are invited to show their work in a outreach presentation or workshop to a public school class in the area. The presentation/workshop can be scheduled with Caldera’s youth program staff. This is offered as an opportunity for those interested; it is not required. Interviews with local newspapers, an adult workshop or public readings/talks are also encouraged.

Our expansion of the criteria for our residency participants reflects a belief that creativity is not discipline-specific but rather is an innate quality of all individuals, transcending age, gender, race, and culture. We believe a blend of disciplines will enhance the experience of the residencies at caldera, creating a broader arena of ideas in which participants can share their work.
